District 9

Neil Blomkamp's District 9 is as innovative as Alien was in its time: an extraterrestrial race, forced to live in a township-like ghetto on Earth (South Africa), suddenly finds a kindred spirit in an unlikely government official, Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharto Copley). During his harrassment of the alien refugees, Wikus is exposed to their biotechnology and starts to mutate with disastrous, if touching, consequences. This is a film that is a truly fresh take on Apartheid and the SciFi genre. It incorporates flavours from slum action thriller City Of God, The Fly II, and even ET. Surprisingly, it also has a heart...

Neill Blomkamp does a tremendous job with the direction and realism of the film. Sharlto Copley blew me away. I was shocked to see this was his first acting role. The action sequences were well done as well. District 9 is a very unique sci-fi film, one that shouldn't be missed.
