Merchant of Venice

RSC pushing things to an irrervent edge.  Set in a thinly disguised Las Vegas, this adaptation is certainly different and very entertaining.  Except this play is rather more than a comedy and has a genuine tragic depth which, in this production, rarely rises above the fruit machines and gaudy excesses. Scott Handy's Antonio impressive, Patrick Stewart''s equally so, but somehow out of place.  Where was "If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die?..."

A little less of the Elvis and more of the Shakespeare would have gone a long way...
